Vancouver is across the river and across a state line, and that second part is what most of my Portland clients are actually asking about. Washington has no state income tax and Oregon has no sales tax, and which side comes out ahead depends entirely on your situation. I will not guess at it for you: that is a conversation for your accountant, and I would rather you have it before we start looking than after you fall for a house.

What I can tell you is the housing. Central Vancouver runs older and denser, with a real downtown that has changed a great deal in the last decade, and the money generally goes further than it does at a comparable distance on the Oregon side.
